Moving from D800e – D850

I have been using Nikon camera gear for over 7 years now and I have never been let down by the quality of their products. My first Nikkon Camera was the D3x which was the flagship model at the time. Pro body camera with 24megapixels and over 13 stops of dynamic range. I loved that camera for many reasons even though it was the most expensive piece of photography equipment that I had ever purchased, over $8000 and that was with a great discount. Shortly after that, I added the D3s to my kit which was an amazing camera too. This was another pro body camera but this time it allowed me to shoot amazing quality images in low light or handheld situation. You have all heard the saying, It’s not the gear that takes the photo, its the photographer’. I agree with that to a certain extent but having good quality camera gear definitely does make a difference.

Step into 2012 and the Nikon D800e was released and I jumped at the chance to grab a couple of them immediately. This was a lighter camera with better image quality and larger file sizes. Again, megapixels are not the be all and end all of photography. But they’re kind of important when you are producing large format prints. And at that time I was really excited to be able to print at up to and beyond ninety-inch prints with amazing detail. I continued to use my D800e’s for 6 years and I was really happy with how they performed.

2018 comes along and an announcement was made by Nikon. The Nikon D850 was about to be released and I was again in the market for some new camera’s. The D850 was a significant upgrade to the D800e. 45megapixes, faster frame rates, better low light performance and improved dynamic range. I quickly placed an order for 2 Nikon D850’s and as expected, I haven’t looked back. The build quality is as expected and so too is the image quality.

AF- S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED

This lens has been on my list for quite some time now. It has an exceptional reputation when it comes to the quality of the images it produces. The lens is well known for its remarkable edge-to-edge performance, superb colours and excellent contrast across the zoom range. This lens is an excellent choice no matter what type of photography you favour. It’s an especially excellent choice for landscape and architectural photography. It has also been constructed to withstand heavy use in the field and under any circumstances. It is indeed a great addition to any photographers camera kit. Some would say that it is an expensive lens but I say to them, ‘You get what you pay for’.

AF- S Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G

This is another lens that I have wanted to add to my kit for quite some time. Although my go-to lens for landscape photography is usually my 16-35mm or my 14-24mm, the fixed focal distance of a prime is sometimes the best fit for the job. Landscape photography is a huge part of what I do but I also enjoy shooting portraits, weddings and commercial/corporate work too. The 85mm becomes an invaluable piece of equipment for these other types of photography. Again the 85mm f/1.4 is an expensive lens and I would highly recommend it, but if your budget does not allow for it, I would consider the cheaper alternative of the 85mm f/1.8. This is also a fantastic lens to have in your camera kit.

AF- S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G

This lens much like the 85mm is not so much my go too for landscape photography but its the lens that lives on my camera for everyday shooting. And by everyday shooting I mean, family photos, weddings and portrait work. It is the much-preferred lens of the portrait photographer and the street photographer but it is also a great lens for the astrophotographer thanks to the fast aperture of f/1.4. This also makes it an ideal travel and low light lens too. And not to forget the fantastic bokeh that this lens creates. I would say that this lens is definitely one of my favourites and I never leave home without it. This is another highly recommended lens from me.
