AUTUMN 2020 NZ TOUR

Lakes
Lakes Of New Zealand
There are more than 3800 large lakes to see

New Zealand is no doubt one of the most picturesque countries in the world. As a landscape photographer, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a lake scene to photograph. On our tour of New Zealand’s South Island, we’ll get to visit 3 of the largest lakes there are. These lakes are Lake Te Anau, Lake Wakatipu and Lake Wanaka. We will have many photo opportunities to get some amazing photos of these lake over the duration of the tour.

Mountains
Mountains Of New Zealand
New Zealand has some of the most picturesque mountains

New Zealand is well and truly known for its epic mountainous landscapes and photographers from around the world flock to capture their immense beauty. You will get to see first hand what you have seen in thousands of photos all over the internet and in magazines, only this time you will experience the feeling that you get when you are surrounded by these epic landscapes. There will be so many opportunities to take some amazing mountain photos at almost every location we visit.

Rivers
Rivers Of New Zealand
There are more than 40 major river systems in the south

Landscape photographers are drawn to rivers and it’s not hard to understand why. Some of my favourite photos of all time have been taken in New Zealand with a river in the foreground. The colours, texture and motion of the water can create some absolutely amazing photos. We will be stopping along the way on several occasion to capture the beauty of the emerald/aqua waters of the rivers of New Zealand. When you look down from the bridge to Shotover River, you absolutely get chills in your bones. The colour of the water and the Autumn colours in the trees look so amazing. New Zealand truly has so much to offer the landscape photographer.

Common Questions About The Photo Tour

Where Do We Meet Up?
  • All participants will be collected from Christchurch airport up arrival. We will meet at a designated location inside the airport whicg will be given to you in your final documentatiton.
What Gear Do I Need?
  • DSLR Camer with Lens/Lenses
  • Spare batteries, there will be long days
  • A sturdy tripod
  • Remote shutter release
  • Filters if you have them (Polariser/Graduate/ND)
  • Laptop (There’s an option to cover some post-production)
  • Good Walking Shoes
  • Wet weather gear, compact umbrella and camera hood
  • A great attitude
What Clothing Should I Bring?
The weather can change at a moments notice in New Zealand. I recommend warm clothing but as always, layers are best. Gumboots are a great addition too, so you can get into those ice-cold rivers and lakes to get the composition you want.

  • Comfortable warm clothing
  • Layers are best (i.e. long sleeve tops, fleece, jacket, gloves, beanie)
  • Good supportive hiking boots and a lightweight pair too if you have them
What You Will Photograph?
There will be a bunch of photo opportunities over the duration of the photo tour. We will travel to several different areas that will see us photograph:

  • Rivers
  • Lakes
  • Mountains
  • Sunrises
  • Sunest
  • plus more…
What Fitness Level Is Required?
All tour participants are expected to have a moderate level of fitness. There are no major hikes planned but where possible we would like everyone to be able to walk for about an hour unassisted.
What Happens If I Need To Cancel My Booking?
At the time of booking, you will need to pay a 50% deposit to hold your place. If you have to cancel for any reason, you will forfeit your deposit unless we can find someone to take your place. It is highly recommended that you take out travel insurance at the time of booking as this will normally cover your loss of deposit (please confirm with your insurer) if you need to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances.
What Will The Weather Be Like
You should expect some quite chilly conditions and although we are unlikely to get cold enough weather for a snowfall, the average daytime temperature is around 15°c and the average nighttime temperature is around 6°c.
How Many Participants Will Be On The Tour?
There will be a maximum of 8 participants on the tour and a minimum of 4. I find any more than 8 becomes less enjoyable for everyone attending. With only 8 participants on the tour I have plenty of time to giver each participant some 1 – on – 1 tuition.
How Do I Book My Place?
Booking has been made extremely simple. All you have to do is fill in the very short booking form at the top of the page. Once I receive your email, I will send you an invoice to make your payment. You can choose to pay a holding fee of 50% or you can pay the full amount upfront if you prefer. Once your payment has been received, your place will be secure.
Do I Need Travel Insurance?
I highly recommend travel insurance and as a participant in the workshop, it is a compulsory requirement that you have it. I also highly recommend that you have seperate camera insurance. For the most part, your travel insurance may only cover a small amount of loss or damage to your equipment.

New Zealand Photo Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Lake Tekapo

Our first stop is Lake Tekapo so we will need to get on the road quickly in order to get there for Sunset. If we have a clear night sky, Lake Tekapo is a great location to try out some astrophotography. Lake Tekapo is for the Church of the Good Shepard. It is the most photographed church in the southern hemisphere.

Day 2 – The Road To Wanaka

We will start the day with a sunrise shot at Lake Tekapo before hitting the road to Wanaka. There will be so many photo opportunities on the road to Wanaka and we’ll make sure to stop and spend some time at a few of these locations. Some of the highlights will be the drive into Mount Cook. We  won’t be spending too much time in the area but it’s one of my favourite drives. We’ll also drive through Lindis Pass as we make our way to Wanaka. We’ll arrive at Wanaka with plenty of time for a Sunset shoot.

Day 3 – The Road To Te Anau

We’ll start of the day with a sunrise shoot at the Wanaka Tree before getting on the road. The drive to Te Anau is a long one, but there is a lot to see along the way. We’ll make some stops and make it to Te Anua for Sunset. Lake Te Anau is one of New Zealand’ largest lakes and its such a wonderful little town.

Day 4 – The Road To Milford Sound

Day 4 is a day of epic scenery. The drive to Milford sound is amazing. We’ll see it all, mountains, rivers, lakes and ancient forests. The only thing that will hamper our efforts on this drive is the weather. The area can receive up to 8,000 millimetres of rain per year. This can be a good thing because this means that its unlikely that we will see any boring blue skies and more likely that we get some great moody skies. The trip to Milford Sound is always one of the highlights of the tour.

Day 5 – The Road To Queenstown

We couldn’t start our day in a better place for a sunrise shoot. Milford Sound is an amazing part of the world with huge mountains rising straight out of the water. I think everyone will love this location as much as I do. It’s another 4 hr drive back to Queens town without any stops, so we’ll need to hit the road as early as we can in order to leave us enough time for shooting around Queenstown. I have some great locations lined up to shoot and I know everyone will love them.

Day 6 – Queenstown The Finale

This is our last day and our last sunrise shoot. We’ll take a drive up to Coronet Peak. We’ll enjoy our last breakfast in Arrowtown and some free time in Queenstown before departing New Zealand.
